Diamond Jack's Red Sea Reefer 525xl

81 posts in this topic

After almost 2 years out, its time to get back in. The goal is to have a nice mixed reef tank that the whole family will enjoy. During the time I was out, the Red Sea Reefer tanks were released. I saw a smaller one at a LFS and was very impressed with the build quality. Also really liked how the cabinet has a separate area for the sump and another area for equipment. I need to keep everything enclosed and secured since the tank will be in my kids playroom area.

Here is what I have so far:

Red Sea Reefer 525xl

Vertex Omega 150 skimmer

Reef Octopus Varios 6 return pump

Hydro Magnum 7 (2750gph) x2

Hydor smart wave controller

Giesemann Matrixx ii 6 bulb t5 fixture

Artfully Acrylic tank lid with feed door

Cad Lights Lamp Tree

Ati Blue Plus x3

Ati Coral Plus

Ati True Actinic

Ati Purple Plus

Reef Keeper Lite

Eheim Jager 200w heater x2

Brs 75gph 4 stage ro/di

100lbs Fiji/Pukani/tonga Live rock

60 pounds Tropical Marin Reef Flakes

Plan to get stand buildt this weekend. Going to try to not rush the setup. Planning on keeping this tank for a long time. (Not like my last 5 tanks!) Special thanks to all the people I keep bugging about random build related questions (Ryan, Poolman, Will...etc). Trying to get this build as dialed in as possible off the bat.

Probably not doing a manifold off the bat. But plan on adding that and a few reactors down the line.

Upgrade flow to vortechs or gyre eventually.

Came with a pad in sump area and on top that is nice.

Best part is I checked it in 9 spots and everything comes up level. More level than I could shim it to, that is for sure.

Thanks. As long as doors shut you're good to go. Next thing I have to figure out is how to child lock the thing. Always another adventure.

Clean looking setup!

I really like the white stand.

Thanks Myke! Good to see you on the site again. We need to get you a tank!

I've been putting work in slow and steady. Took the stainless steel lamp tree I bought and made it look better.

I happy with how the finish turned out. It matches the light pretty dang close. Had to kinda wing it on setting up the hanging kit. It didn't come with instructions.Things seem to be holding steady. It fells a little sketch that the lamp hangers are only held on with 2 brackets and 4 screws each. So far so good though.

Also secured the cabinet with some fancy baby locks. No drilling needed.

Next up getting the sump/ equipment/ and tank in I suppose :D

Ha! Just glad to be back in the hobby and club!

Here is what I have for today.

Thank god tank is in safe. Fyi its heavy. 4 people are needed to get this thing in. Its always tense moving a tank in.

32451230895_ed038c0cdb_c.jpg

Ended up snagging a vectra. The varios 6 was hard to track down fs anywhere last week and I panic upgraded. It looks solid.

32073003450_ca97ae0ee1_c.jpg

Currently making water to fill tank. 13 gallons down. Maybr 115 to go... lol

Also forgot to mention, I figured out my t5 fixture takes 4 outlets. 3 plus and an ac adaptor. Seemed excessive for a 6 bulb.

I just went through your equipment list again and i have to ask WHY NO mp40s? With a build like this and it being a rimless tank no cords should be allowed in the display 😆
