    Members Input Needed

You mention “angry” sponsors. What are they specifically upset about? What does a sponsor give the club, and what do they expect in return? I never bothered to get a membership card after I paid, so I don’t use NVR as a discount mechanism for my purchases anywhere. I went to Your Reef to pick up my Blasto for the contest, and it was the first time I was ever in that shop. I really liked it, and I’ll be going back. While I was picking up my frag, I actually spend just under $600 on other stuff. Then, John seemed concerned that he had given me an empty salt bucket to transport my new fish, since he didn’t have a bag big enough for the PB. He actually said I could return the bucket on my next trip... I know margins are slim, but I’m really not sure what the shop owners are expecting. Also, I have NO idea what the expenses of the club itself are. What is the annual cost of keeping the forum up and running? Is there anything else involved? I, personally, have very low expectations. I’m really happy to have a way to connect with local hobbyists, like earlier this year when I needed to unload a bunch of corals from a tank change. Then it was really great to be able to borrow a spare tank from Robert to do TTM on my new fish. Stuff like that is great. Michael Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Your Reef's blasto grow out tracking thread

Okay, so I’m new-ish here, and have a question. My goal is to share techniques to help us all have better tanks. Since this is a competition, maybe no one wants to give away secrets just yet. But maybe when it’s over the people that were successful could share things like parameters, feeding etc? I’m happy to wait, but also excited to improve as a hobbyist. I know it’s technically a competition.... what are you feeding, and how often? I turkey baste some PE mysis at mine with the flow off, but don’t really see a response. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Not sure I’ll get the nice camera out before the deadline, so here is my October pics from the iPad. Still just 2 heads. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

NVR BBQ and White Elephant Game

I'm 90% in. Nothing to swap, sadly. But I have an ask. I just started up my fuge, and need a cup of cheato (from an ich-free tank...). Does anyone have any that will be at the "Q"?

Right, so this pic was taken on 8/29. I think I posted it on my photography thread? same 2 heads I started with. I beg forgiveness of the BOD Perhaps I need to pay penance by bringing TWO items to the BBQ? I'm not Catholic, so I'm not sure if that's how it works.... Honestly, if any other contestant doesn't feel it's fair I continue, I'll totally respect that.

Well dang it. I thought the first picture covered September. Guess I'm out. I have 3 new babies on the Acan next to it, too! Michael Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

actually, I don't. but good idea. I was going to purchase a single white ceramic tile next time I was in HD and use that. Next question: where should I put up an album for public viewing as I start taking shots? Or just start a build-thread?

super true. In fact, I'm shocked just how much information is in a RAW file. I've taken shots that seem completely dark, and then pull them up in Lightroom to look just fine.. My goal in this thread started with wanting the basics for a crisp shot without specific worry about composition. That's next, obviously. I'm about to start a build thread, and I wanted to have a shot of every coral so that I can look back next year and check the growth.

Okay, I did exactly the same: ISO 400 - f/11, 1/15". 50mm, instead of 100mm. I had the LEDs at 100% (but have NO idea what K they are). I'm using a WB of "cloudy", which is 6000K, since that's the highest I think my XSi can go without sticking a piece of white plastic in the tank to set my Custom WB. This time, I didn't adjust ANY levels in Lightroom. This is a cropped, exported RAW image. I must say the focus is MUCH better already. BTW, what kind of coral is this? One of the club members (Joey or Ricardo) gave it to me when they got some of my free LPS. It's doing great!

Okay, that makes sense. I keep on needing to refresh myself on the basics, since I'm learning to go beyond point-and-shoot. For the Blasto pic, which is really the main topic for this thread: f/4 is a bigger opening than f/11, so I get a shallower DOF, right? So why, for the same ISO, did I need a 2 second exposure, as compared to the 1/6" for the BTA? (yes, the Blasto is in the shade, so maybe that's it). I really appreciate the patient, helpful advice here. Hopefully I can ask questions that others are too embarrassed to ask, to spread the knowledge....

    Sump Lighting?

maintenance light? Or fuge light for macro? To see what's up under the stand, I use a basic clamp light with the brightest bulb I can find. eventually I'll add stand door switches, but for now I just turn it on with the Apex app on my iPad. Over the fuge it's a Mars hydro. $80 on Amazon and will light your entire house if you don't shield it. You can't compete with your DT $1000 lights with a $5 bulb down below.... But you mentioned being able to see, not grow macro.
